課程概述

Physical anthropology is an interdisciplinary study, which employs biological and cultural approaches to decipher the history of human beings - who are we? The course aims to provide an introduction to the field and an overview of human evolution. It is divided into four parts. We begin with the most important components of our body - genes, followed by the process of natural selection works and genetic inheritance. Then we address adaptation and diversity through the body of living humans. Before we discuss the origins of our ancestors, it is essential to have a firm grasp of our closest living relatives, the primates. Next we focus on the fossil remains discovered over the globe and conclude by the microevolution of Homo sapiens sapiens in the Holocene.

課程目標
Upon the completion of the course, students will be able to:
a. Explain the basic concepts of genetic inheritance.
b. Identify the mechanisms of evolution, adaption and diversity.
c. Differentiate the biological and cultural differences between humans and non-human primates.
d. Describe the characteristic of human skeletal structure.
e. Identify and compare Australopithecine, early Homo and anatomically modern humans (AMH).
f. Assess whether or not humans are still evolving.
課程要求
a. Students must read all assigned readings before each lecture and are encouraged to actively participate in class discussions.
b. No food or drinks will be allowed in the lectures. All electronic devices must be turned off or switched to silent mode.
c. All assignments must be submitted by the deadlines. Late assignments will only be graded with a maximum of 50%. If you have any unavoidable reasons (such as medical reasons or family emergencies), please contact your instructor prior to the deadlines.
d. There are no make up exams or quizzes. However, if you have to miss a quiz for appropriate reasons, you must notify the instructor within 24 hours and provide appropriate documentation. A make-up exam or quiz will only be given at the instructor’s discretion.
e. Plagiarism and cheating are unacceptable and intolerable. All assignments and reports must be your own work, and all outside sources must be cited. Anyone cheating on an exam will receive a grade of zero for that exam and will be reported to the Head of Department.
f. If you have any questions, please come speak with the instructor after lectures or by appointment. Alternatively, emailing is the most efficient way to contact the instructor. All email inquiries will be replied within 1-3 working days. Please use ‘NTU Physical Anthropology’ as the subject to avoid to be treated as junk mails and state your real name, otherwise they will not be responded.
